DD Sunshine are Central Region champs

DD Sunshine are the 2016 Central Region Women Football League Champions after they bagged full points in their last two games.

Sunshine beat Skippers 1-0 before being awarded full points after Dowa Stars failed to show up for their last game of the league.

With the wins, they have finished the league with 36 points and an unbeaten record.

DD Sunshine striker Sabina Thom, who scored the lone goal against Skippers, has won the Golden Boot Award with 45 goals.

Skippers have finished on second position with 30 points from 12 games. Their striker Linda Kasenda is also runner-up to Thom with 30 goals.

Lilongwe Stars have finished the league on position three with 24 points while Chilinde have wrapped up the season on fourth position with 18 points.

Sunshine team manager Alice Msiska hailed the girls for a successful season.

“It has been a fruitful season as we also won the Central Region Presidential Cup. The success shows that the team is in good shape and beating our rivals Skippers five times this season sums up our regional dominancy,” said Msiska.

Skippers’ top scorer Kasenda said the season had mixed fortunes.

She said: “We did not perform as expected this season and it was the worst season ever. We will sit down and do a postmortem so that we can bounce back next season.

“The league committee did not help us this season. They leaved a lot to de desired in their administration. They could not produce a log table even a single day up to the last day.  It was like we were just playing without knowing the direction.”

CRWFL general secretary Ellah Banda said the league faced a lot of challenges.

“We managed to overcome some of the challenges we faced. The issue of not producing the log table is from the fixtures desk, but we are promising to work up to the expectations in the next season. We are pleased that now we have finished the league successfully,” said Banda.

As champions, Sunshine will receive a trophy and K750 000 while Skippers will get K500 000 as runners-up.

LL Stars and Chilinde will receive K250 000 and K150 000 on third and fourth places, respectively.

The league started with eight teams and finished with six after Nkhotakota Fc and Factured pulled out, prior to the start of the second round. n
