The blast also injured Msamala’s friend whose details were not yet established but is currently admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe.

The person, who brought the grenade, left the welding shop before the explosion that also injured two other people.

“The three were taken to Dedza District Hospital where Msamala and his friend were referred to KCN, unfortunately Msamala died at Kamphata,” said the source.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview on Tuesday evening, Central Region Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani said experts from  the explosives department in the Malawi Police Service rushed  to the scene of the accident to confirm if the item was a indeed a hand grenade.

“I can confirm that indeed an item suspected to be a hand grenade has claimed a person’s life in Dedza, but we will confirm if the item is indeed a grenade when our friends from the explosives brief us once their investigations are done,” said Mushani.

The late Msamala played in the TNM Super League last season before Dedza Young Soccer was relegated to Chipiku League. n
