Mutharika wants more research in UNIMA colleges.
Mutharika said college lecturers and professors must not waste their time commenting on trivia in the public domain, but should instead invest their time in meaningful research.
He said: “A good university is known by its research and publications, so it is high time we put our universities on the world map through our research and innovations.
“I, therefore, urge lecturers to do more research which should get published in international journals.”
Mutharika said this on Saturday night during a fundraising dinner organised by University of Malawi (Unima) for its golden jubilee celebrations to be held in September.
In his remarks, Unima vice-chancellor Professor John Kalenga Saka said that, among others, Unima aims at enhancing research and widening access to quality and relevant education.
Said Saka: “Unima enhances research, widening access to quality and relevant education and strengthening governance and accountability.”
The event, which Vice-President Saulos Chilima also attended, was held at Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc) attracted about 4 000 people from a cross-section of society, most of whom were alumni of Unima.
During the dinner, the director of ceremonies Benedicto Okomaatani Malunga, who is also Unima registrar, auctioned 40 metres of jubilee cloth at K100 000 to the Chief Secretary Georege Mkondiwa, and another 40 metres to Minister of Health, Jean Kalilani at K75 000.
When Unima opened its doors in 1965, it had a student population of 90 today the student population stands at 11 000.

  1. How can they do research when you and your cronies (the Mullis of this world) are busy stealing money? Dont you know that research needs money, equipment, instruments, space etc etc? Until your government
prioritize research and development nothing is gonna happen in Malawi. No wonder Unima is ranked number 100 in Africa alone! Shameful country

  2. Despite ages of advice to the contrary, those who sleep in glass houses still throw stones. I just read comments by a UCT legal scholar (D. Chirwa’s) showing that APM was a VERY mediocre academic. It confirms what I suspected all along — “confirmation bias”? — that this graffiti artist sometimes sits and thinks. But mostly, he just sits. Kumangokhala phwii!

    1. NO!!!! All the above assertions are NOT true. How can they be? Unlike at UCT, Washington U’s School of Law is very highly rated globally, and one does not get full tenured professorship without rigorous research, that is scrutinized heavily. And on a grand scale, the quoted Chirwa is usipa (minnow), when APM is a shark.
Ngombax get real. Is wakwithu (home boy) syndrome blinding you? Please stick to issues you know.

      1. Can you name the research that Mutharika is known for that helped him get elevated to the title of “professor” at WashULaw? I can promise you that there is none! In fact, contrary to what you believe, a typical PhD holder teaching at a four year university in the US and Canada is granted such a title just as a person with the same qualifications teaching at Unima is known as a “lecturer.”
