Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) is set to award legendary Malawian authors later this year, and Dossani Trust contributed K1.2 million (about $3 000) to the cause, on Tuesday.

“This amount will be utilised by Mawu to award K100 000 (about $250) each to legendary Malawian authors. Dossani Trust supports Malawian writers and authors and this donation will hopefully encourage more writers to contribute to society,” said Harish Kanabar, a trustee of Dossani Trust during the cheque presentation ceremony.

Mawu president, Tsambalikagwa Mvona said among other authors, Desmond Dudwa Phiri, Lupenga Mphande, Legson Kaira, John William Gwengwe and P.P. Litete will be awarded.

“These authors were able to move their readers and they are a motivation tool to upcoming writers, and this is why we saw the need to do this. Apart from that, their writing contributes to the education standards of this country as well as promotes the Malawi culture,” said Mvona.

The trust also donated K500 000 (about $1 250) to jacaranda Foundation, which the institution’s executive director, Luc Deschamps said would help them to send five students that have completed their secondary school education to colleges.

Jacaranda Foundation provides free education, nutrition and medical facilities to 412 orphans around Chigumula and the surrounding villages.

Dossani Trust has been regularly donating funds to Jacaranda, and Kanabar was hopeful the funds donated would assist at the institution.
