Newly appointed Democratic ProgressiveParty (DPP) Secretary General (SG) Francis Mphepo on Sunday went to town attacking media for what he described as “false stories” aimed to discredit President Peter Mutharika and his administration.

Mphepo made the remarks at Masintha Ground in Lilongwe during a political rally organised to welcome members of Parliament (MPs) and other politicians who have defected to the ruling party.

But Media Institute for Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter has advised DPP to concentrate on “governing rather than wasting fighting the media”.

The DPP chief accused the media of serving the interests of the Opposition at the expense of practicing professional journalism.

He said: “You have been writing false stories that the Mutharika administration has failed to deliver on its promises. But is this really the case when the DPP administration is carrying out a number development projects nationwide?”

Mphepo said the party is not happy with the rating media is giving the DPP leadership as regards fulfillment of the promises they made during campaign prior to the May 20 2014 tripartite elections.

“How can you rate DPP poorly like this? Are you blind that you can’t see what the Mutharika-led government is achieving?

“If you have nothing to write in your newspapers, throw yourselves into the lake. You should go and sell your propaganda-ridden newspapers in hell,” he said.

The DPP chief also criticised the Opposition for asserting that the Mutharika’s administration is clueless on how to resolve the prevailing socioeconomic hardships.

Mphepo said Mutharika and his administration have lined up a number of plans to resolve the socioeconomic hardships Malawians are facing today.

But in his reaction, chairperson for Media Institute for Southern Africa (Misa) Malawi Chapter Thom Khanje simply said: “DPP to concentrate on “governing rather than wasting fighting the media”.

  1. If the media would sell their newspapers in hell then definately DPP lead by Peter Munthalika would be there before the media could start to print their first sentence of the cover page. It’s so pity to note that matured people just because they are under a candle light that doesn’t shine they tend to become blind when they are actually not.The social economical issues that we are in, equally, is a disaster, a situation that doesn’t even need an academician to let to know that prompt actions are required than plans. It means to me that the president in his secrecy,in his home work when he thought to be a presidential candidate did not include a ‘what if’solution from globally profesion view.everywhere as the global economy is changed to worse it needs a tactical professional approach and swift action. So Thom Khanje is right.
