Driver arrested for killing 6-year old child

Police in Mchinji have arrested a 22-year old driver, Snowden Chikhasu, on suspicion that he caused death of a six-year old pedestrian through reckless driving.

Mchinji Police Station public relations officer (PRO) Inspector Kaitano Lubrino said on December 4 2016 at around 1700 hours, Chikhasu was driving through the Mkanda – Kapiri earth road on Toyota Ipsum vehicle registration number BP2719.

Lubrino said upon reaching at Chaponda Village, the motor vehicle hit Manuel Daudi who was crossing the road from right to the left side.

“The child died on the spot. The child met his fate as he wanted to welcome his grandmother who coming from visiting her relatives within the village and by then she was on the other side of the road,” said the publicist.

Lubrino said postmortem conducted at Mchinji District Hospital established that death was due to severe head injuries.

“The suspect will appear before court to answer the charge of causing death by reckless/negligent driving which is contrary to section 126 of the Road Traffic Act once police investigations are completed,” he explained.

Chikhasu comes from Kalikokha Village while the deceased hailed from Chaponda Village both under traditional authority (T/A) Mkanda in Mchinji.

Police have since advised parents and guardians to desist from allowing their young children to cross the road by themselves.
