Eagles fly higher
The battle for 2016 TNM Super League championship is far from over, but for now, kudos go to Blue Eagles who yesterday reclaimed the top spot after beating struggling Civo United.
Though it was a boring match as no team put up decent performance, Maxwell Salambula’s goal in the 69th minute made the difference.
The striker evaded Civo defenders to powerfully head past Duncan Mkandawire into the net a Stuart Mbunge corner.
Eagles now lead the table with 51 points from 27 games as the Malawi Police Service side seek to win their first league title.
Kamuzu Barracks (KB) have been pushed to second position with 49 points while Nyasa Big Bullets are third with 48 points. But KB and Bullets have a game in hand each.
For Civo United coaches the relegation threat is now sinking in.
The partnership of Victor Mpinganjira and Thoko Harrison were supposed to save Civo from relegation danger, but failed miserably.
The only moment Mpinganjira threatened was a long range effort 30 minutes into play, which was easily tamed by an alert Eagles goalkeeper John Soko.
Nelson Kangunje’s volley in the 83 minute narrowly missed the upright as Civo upped efforts to salvage a point.
After the match, Civo coach Charles Manda was a disappointed man.
“We did all we could, but I guess it was just not our day. But we still have five games to play. We still can beat relegation,” said a visibly shaken Manda.
On the other hand, Eagles coach Deklerk Msakakuona gave credit to his players.
“We exercised patience despite being frustrated for long periods. The boys kept on the pressure and in the end it paid off. It is a great win for us,” he said. n
