Earth tremor hits part of Malawi

An earth tremor hits some parts of the Southern Region of Malawi in the early hours of Sunday, with some people waking up to the sounds of glass shattering at their windows.

Director of the Geological Surveys Department in the Ministry of Energy and Mines Dr Leonard Kalindekafe said on Sunday the tremor occurred at an epicentre 70 kilometres east of Mulanje in Mozambique at a magnitude of 4.6 on a richer scale.

He said his department was still analysing data on what he described as a medium-sized magnitude although no casualties were reported in the country.

Said Kalindekafe: “The tremor was caused by movements along a fault on the Mozambican side. The time of the occurrence was 2:10 am. Some of the affected parts include Machinga, Zomba, Blantyre, Thyolo, Phalombe and Mulanje.”
