Egenco rolls out operations

The newly-formed Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) Limited has now started its operations from the fifth floor of Chayamba Building in Blantyre, it has been established.

A visit to Chayamba Building on Thursday found members of staff working while installation of other electrical appliances and cables was in progress.

Escom generation equipment will now be under Egenco

Egenco has taken on board William Liabunya, who was Kapichira Hydropower station manager as chief executive officer while Rex Mhone, Shadric Namalomba and Laben Nsondhi have taken up other managerial positions.

Escom unbundling is part of power sector reform project, a component of the $350.7 million (about K242 billion) United States of America (USA) government–funded Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) energy compact that seeks to improve generation and distribution  infrastructure.

In an earlier interview, deputy director in the Department of Energy Affairs Joseph Kalowekamo said government committed itself to ensuring that the company is operational in January 2017. n
