Employee benefits top labour disputes, says Laro

Disputes over employee benefits top the list of labour disputes in Malawi, Labour Rights Organisation (Laro) board chairperson Frank Adini has said.
Adini said this on Friday during training for human resource personnel and employee representatives, at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre.
He said some companies are not remitting money to the pensions administrator, making payment of benefits difficult.

“The economy is in bad shape at the moment and redundancies are frequent. But some companies are not paying their ex-employees benefits accordingly.
“Some of them are not complying with the Pensions Act, which makes it mandatory for companies to remit pensions to the fund administrator,” said Adini.
Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Charles Chuka is the administrator of pension funds.
Adini said close to 30 participants attended the training aimed at reducing company losses resulting from labour dispute settlement.
Industrial Relations Court (IRC) deputy chairperson Jack N’riva said aggrieved employees on pensions can seek remedy from the RBM governor.
“The court is mostly bombarded with employees complaining of unfair dismissals, and disciplinary hearings that took the form of a court. We encourage employees and employers to have collective bargaining agreements where they both win in resolving a dispute,” he said. 
