Malawi schools drama festival returns

The Association for the Teaching of English in Malawi (Atem) has announced that they will conduct the schools drama competition across the country on February 23 2013.

This is the time that secondary schools show their theatrical expertise by being creative and captivate the audience with their plays.

Atem vice-president Foster Mwale said in an interview on Friday that the regional committees will be responsible for the logistical arrangements.

“We are starting the drama festivals for secondary schools this month and I urge all to make final touches for the event. As Atem, we are hopeful that this year’s event will be a successful one,” he said.

He disclosed that South-West Education Division (Swed) will have Zingwangwa Secondary School in Blantyre as its venue whereas Shire Highlands Education Division (Shed) will host the event at Luchenza Secondary School in Thyolo.

Adds the Atem vice-president: “Schools in the South-East Education Division [Seed] have Likangala Secondary School in Zomba as the venue. In the North, the event will be held at Katoto Secondary School in Mzuzu whereas a venue for the Central Region has not yet being communicated at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Likangala has intensified preparations for the competition having failed to take part last year.

“We are leaving no stone unturned this time around and being the host school for the event is just giving us an advantage to perform well. All schools should brace for a tough competition from us,” said the drama patron and teacher in English Mike Kanyamula.
