EU boosts operations at Kasungu Prison
The European Union (EU) has painted Kasungu Prison as one way of improving its sanitation.
Speaking when he toured the prison on Monday, EU press and political officer James Dolan expressed satisfaction with the Malawi Prison Service (MPS) response to the initiatives.
“The idea is to ensure that inmates get humane treatment and that doesn’t come cheap; hence our intervention,” he said.
Acting chief commissioner of prisons Little Mtengano said the interventions have improved operations in its prisons, including Kasungu.
He said the intervention will assist the prison to prevent diseases.
“To begin with, the pots will enable the facility feed the inmates at appropriate times which is also a right,”he said.
Technical Facilitation Unit task manager Chimwemwe Mangeni said if the rights of prisoners can be protected and upheld, it will help in community development. n
