FAM rules out Cecafa presence

FAM has ruled out the possibility of Flames playing in the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup later this month in Ethiopia.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu said on day that although most of the expenses are met by the organisers, Flames have not been invited to participate as guests.

Flames_afcon_celebration“Besides that, we exhausted all our funding during the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign and they cannot raise money to cater for other expenses such as players’ bonuses,” said Nyamilandu.

He said, as such, the association will be selective on tournaments to participate in.

“We will also forego international friendly matches on Fifa calendar dates.

“The national team is now on break until next year when we will take part in the Cosafa Cup [in May]. Depending on availability of resources, we may also take part in Chan [Championship of African Nations],” he said.

Nyamilandu also said FAM will continue with its fund-raising drive to cater for next year’s engagements.

“But we are also mindful that we have an official sponsor and we have part of next year’s sponsorship remaining.”

Flames last took part in Cecafa tournament in 2012 in Uganda as guests.
