FAM says employee cannot double as affiliate

FAM has said its employees cannot double as affiliates as it creates a conflict of interest.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda was reacting to technical director (TD) John Kaputa’s resignation as National Football Coaches Committee (NFCC) chairperson.

Nyirenda said he informed Kaputa and the association’s technical development manager Charles Manda, who doubles as the national coaches body’s general secretary, on the need to step down.

“We gave them up to December 1 to resign and so far, we understand that the TD has resigned, but we are waiting for official communication to that effect. We also expect Mr. Manda to follow suit,” said Nyirenda.

Manda said he was still consulting, but hinted that he would quit as referees GS.

“I cannot serve two masters at once. It means I will have to step down and pass on the mantle to my deputy Benjamin Kumwenda, but as at now I am still consulting.”

Kaputa said while he was communicated on the issue by the FAM CEO, the coaches committee constitution is clear on his position.

“The NFCC constitution states clearly that the FAM TD will be an ex-official and I have, therefore, instructed my deputy Jomo Ngonga to take over and I will be playing an advisory role.

“However, there will be a time I will officially hand over. In fact, the NFCC executive suggested that our subcommittee responsible for constitutional issues should look into the matter, but I told them that there would be no need as I have already stated my position,” said Kaputa.

On Manda’s position, Kaputa said: “With him, it is different because the [NFCC] constitution is silent and maybe it can be determined by the constitutional committee.”
