The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has expressed interest to bid for the management of Lilongwe Community Centre ground.

FAM’s interest follows last week’s floatation of the facility by the Lilongwe City Council (LCC) to interested bidders.

According to LCC chief executive officer (CEO) Moza Zeleza, the community centre is among three facilities the council is floating.  Others are the Old Town Hall and the council’s rest house near the bus depot and the main market.

“The council intends to engage reputable firms, individuals or organisations to operate and manage some of our commercial establishment including the community ground. We believe the facility has been under-utilised despite having the potential to offer more services in recreation and sporting fields ,” he said.

FAM commercial director Limbani Matola said they have discussed the issue at secretariat level and are seeking the executive committee’s approval.

“We applaud the LCC for taking this bold step. The community ground is in a dilapidated state. It was a drain on the council’s finances as it did not make any returns.

“It used to host big matches and as FAM we are very much interested to submit a bid. But we need  FAM executive’s consent,” said Matola.

Apart from the football pitch, the brick-fenced facility has netball, volleyball, and basketball courts.  It also has offices, mini shops, and a hall. n
