Malawians expect fast and reliable Internet service by February 2018 thanks to the Malawi National Optic Fibre Backbone Project which government rolled out in April 2017.

The project seeks to have digitalised and integrated government operating systems and improved quality of information communication and telecommunication (ICT) services.

In an interview, Minister of Information and Communications Technology Nicholas Dausi said phase one of the project has been completed and the project will be through in February this year.

“What is remaining now is to go out to the districts to sensitise people to usage and importance of this modern technological service to the growth of our economy,” he said.

Among other benefits, the project will strengthen online transactions in government and make it easy to track ghost workers in the public service as it connects the country’s human resource system which will keep up-to-date data of employees.

The project is being carried out by a Chinese firm, Huawei Technologies Company.

In an interview, Chinese Ambassador Wang Shi Ting commended Malawi for migrating from analogue to digital technology which, he said, will offer high class Internet services.

“It is high time Malawians started enjoying vibrant Internet connectivity,” he said.
