FDH Bank partners Mary’s Meals in tree planting

FDH Bank have given K1.3 million (US$2 889) to Mary’s Meals to boost the charity’s drive in planting trees in schools the organisation undertakes school-feeding programmes.
The bank’s head of corporate banking Sitabane Majamanda said Mary’s Meals initiative will help to reduce negative effects of climate change, soil erosion and other effects that are directly related to uncontrolled deforestation.
“Our interest in partnering Mary’s Meals in tree planting is, therefore, not coincidental. This is one way of showing our interest in sustainable development of the environment and active involvement in environmental issues,” she said.
Majamanda said the tree-planting exercise is not just for beautification purposes, but it is part of a long-term renewable energy source campaign.
Mary’s Meals director of finance Mike Miller expressed gratitude to FDH Bank for the donation, saying it will go a long way in conserving the environment.
“We are grateful for the donation because it will help us to plant trees at schools so that we have woodlots. The trees will provide fuel source for cooking,” he said, adding that deforestation is a big problem in Malawi.
Miller said, thus far, more than 30 000 tree seedlings have been planted in 600 schools they are operating in.
Mary’s Meals main focus is feeding more than 700 000 children in primary schools nationwide.
