Federer is the real deal

Listen to this article

It is not everyday that a global sporting icon visits our country and more so, on a noble cause and it therefore felt so good that Swiss tennis superstar Roger Federer took time off his crammed schedule to come and launch his Lundu Community-Based Childcare Centre (CBCC) in Area 25, Lilongwe.

I had my share of childhood adventures that landed me in trouble like the other time when I put salt instead of sugar in a cup of tea for a visiting uncle from the village just for the fun of it and likewise, it was nice watching on television bewildered kids caressing him.Rodger-Federer-Foundation

It was not only the kids who got charmed by the tennis superstar, even Vice-President Saulos Chilima was fascinated by the 17 grand slams winner’s visit and went as far as telling him that he was his number two fan in Malawi while his boss President Peter Mutharika is Federer’s number one fan….wina anakaberedwa apa..because I know that Mutharika is not into the world of sports and all that he watches on TV when he is in relaxed mood are Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Chilima went on to tell Federer that he watched his games at Wimbledon and that the unfortunate thing is that Novak Djokovic continues to be a headache, saying: “So, we have to find something to stop him [Djokovic] at the US Open.”

I am quite certain the VP was referring to the fella in Mulanje who helped the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) excel in last year’s general elections and his magic could indeed do the trick for Federer. On a lighter note, the fella should have been taken to the place called Ma-China in Area 47, I doubt if he would have thought of going back.

On a serious note though, we need to take a bow to the Swiss tennis star for the investment he has put in for the good of the kids in the country—$13 million (about K6.4 billion) is not a joke and that he is trying to reach out to 150 000 children is something we need to cherish, isn’t it? Shout with me Yes!

Yes, my favourite has always been Serena Williams and everytime I see her picture in skin-tight mini when she is in action on the court, I get inspired. But I have now come to realise and appreciate that Federer is the real deal. Let’s hope ChisomoLumeta will also scale lofty heights soon and become our own Federer. . Glory be to God.
