Firms tipped on benefits of business networking

Business and management consulting firm Umodzi Consulting has advised local businesses to embrace networking meetings as an essential marketing tool if they are to build a strong presence.

The firm’s managing director Tione Kaonga said this during a business networking event in Blantyre on Friday.

He observed that it is important for businesses to come together, saying this creates opportunities for both budding and established business to sell their products and broaden their capacity through sharing of knowledge and experiences.

“There are many opportunities that businesses can learn from each other.  One way in which this can be unleashed is if they come together, interact and market their goods and services.

“Through these gatherings, we see challenges that businesses are facing and together find solutions or mitigating factors. It is during such events that businesses understand, build trust with fellow entrepreneurs and learn how to be organised,” said Kaonga.

He noted that Malawian businesses are poor at networking unlike their counterparts in other African countries; hence, fail to see opportunities that arise on the market.

“Often times, local businesses have failed to win contracts because  they have no idea of opportunities that exist in the country such that it becomes difficult for them to build consortiums and bid for such tenders,” he said.

Kaonga said besides building capacity of entrepreneurs, which is the firm’s core mandate, Umodzi Consulting believes in inspiring and teaching businesses  how to improve their business performance.

One of the participants, Stan Phiri of Sunrise Ground Tours, described the event as an eye opener, saying it created an opportunity to learn from other businesses.

“Networking is a powerful tool for every business. Not only has this platform inspired and motivated us, we have also learned from the best on how we, as businesses, need to conduct ourselves to achieve maximum results,” he said. n
