Promoting girls’ education and local fashion: Mutharika

Organisers are hopeful the show will be exciting.

“This is the opportunity for all women in Malawi to showcase their skills for a good cause which seeks to promote girls’ education,” said Violet Chinkono, one of the organising committee members.

She said music performances will be provided by Dan Lu, a local artist.

According to Chinkono, contributions will be K1 million for a corporate table, K600 000 (K60 000 per head) for platinum, K400 000 (K40 000 per head) for gold and K300 000 (K30 000 per head) for silver tables.

She said all proceeds of the event will go towards keeping vulnerable girls in school.

The initiative is in line with government’s efforts of promoting girls education in the country.

According to Plan International, which works to promote girls’ education in Malawi, many girls are forced to leave school while others never have the opportunity to go to school in the first place.

Chinkono also challenged local designers to put out their best works to compete favourably at the event.

For inquires and contributions, people to contact are Chinkono on 0999 953 356, 0888 358 049 or Chance Mukhito on 0999 918 881.

One of the local designers, Sheena Namaona of Nzika Arts, described the Buy Malawi Fashion show as a rare opportunity to showcase and promote the local fashion industry.
