Flames to share K3m Cosafa prize money

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has said Flames will share the whole K3 million (R75 000) Cosafa Plate winners’ prize.
FAM first vice-president Moses Mkandawire yesterday confirmed that it pleased the association’s president Walter Nyamilandu to reward the players with the prize money.

“The president phoned me from Zurich [Switzerland] yesterday where he is attending a Fifa general assembly and told me that all the money should be shared among the players and the technical staff as a token of appreciation.
“Of course, we would have loved to win the actual cup, but the boys made up for the exit by beating South Africa and Zambia, which are big teams to win the tournament. So we thought it wise that they should share the little prize money,” said Mkandawire.
The Flames were booted out of the tournament by Mozambique through post-match penalties in the quarter-finals that saw them being relegated to the plate phase.

  1. Is this the way FAM makes decisions? So the president can make a decision and just communicate to his executive to adopt and implement? I would have loved if they said ‘the executive discussed this issue and decided to allow the players to share the money’ irrespective of whether they physically met or just phoned each other. Unfortunately, this is the type of leadership we have in most important institutions.
