Flames two places up on Fifa rankings
The Flames are now positioned 95th out of 207 senior national football teams in the world after jumping by two places on the latest Fifa rankings reviewed on Friday.
On the latest list, Malawi is now ranked 25th in Africa and fifth in southern Africa behind Zambia (68th, 16th in Africa), South Africa (69, 19), Mozambique (81, 20) and Angola (88, 22).
Malawi achieved their best ranking of 67 during some months of 1993 and tumbled to their lowest in May of 2008.
Uganda, who were facing the Flames at Kamuzu Stadium in a warm up match yesterday, are ranked 71 on the world stage and 18 in Africa.
Algeria are rated number 21 in the world and first in Africa followed on second place by Cote d’Ivoire ranked 24th in the world. Tunisia and Ghana occupy 29th and 34th places on world ranking while coming third and fourth in Africa.
Fifa World Cup reigning champions Germany, Belgium, Argentina, Colombia and Brazil complete the world top-five band in that respective order.
With some games played last month and other factors looked at, the world football governing body, Fifa, revised the table. The ranking reflect strength of football in a country and creates opportunities for players to attract big-name clubs. Djibouti are the least ranked in the world.
