Floods destroy maize, homes in Dedza

Floods on Monday night destroyed over 40 hectares of maize crops and 91 houses in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kachindamoto’s area in Dedza District.
Dedza district commissioner James Kanyangalazi said the impact of the floods was big, especially in group village heads Kafulama and Bwanali.

“These people need to be assisted with materials for building temporary shelter, utensils and various food items,” he said.
Kanyangalazi further said assessments are underway to establish a number of maize fields destroyed.

Feliya Zangaya, from GVH Kafulama, said she is now destitute because her house was completely damaged.
“My family’s livelihood has been heavily disrupted. We are now dependent on well-wishers,” said Zangaya, a single mother of five.

Kanyangalazi said three irrigation schemes in the area namely Mwaiwathu, Kamboni and Tiyesere were also partly destroyed.
