Former police IG Nangwale dies

Former Inspector General (IG) of Police Mary Nangwale died yesterday at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre after a long illness.

Nangwale’s sister, Elivey Chirwa, said she succumbed to kidney failure after a four-year battle with the condition.

According to Chirwa, the funeral ceremony tomorrow will start with a church service at Living Waters Church and thereafter she will be laid to rest at Limbe CCAP cemetery in Blantyre.

Nangwale is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

Deputy national police spokesperson Thomeck Nyaude said Nangwale will receive Malawi Police Service (MPS) burial honour.

Nangwale’s appointment as IG by former president Bingu Wa Mutharika was rejected by Parliament in 2005. Mutharika later appointed Nangwale as special adviser on security. n
