“I had long shots with my driver. The coach [Dingaan Chirwa] has also been training me very well and it feels really good,” said the 10-year-old whose runner-up was Nchalo-based Patrick Mtileni but a student at St. Andrews International Primary School in Blantyre.
In the nine-hole category, the runner-up was Wade Windell (73 strokes) while Carlo Van der Walt was third (79 strokes). In five-hole category, Adam Stanely came second (48 strokes) followed by Gibrail Lambat (52 strokes). Mathew Hutton was the runner-up in the three-hole category (29 strokes) while Rory Stanely was third (33 strokes).
Managing director of Maine Signs, Renita Lambat, said they sponsored the tournament because they would like to contribute towards the development of the game from the grass roots.
“It is good when children start at such a tender age because it ensures progress and again, we also love golf and our son [Gibrail] is one of the junior golfers. We also would like to thank Blantyre Sports Club and the junior golf committee for providing us an opportunity to sponsor the tournament,” she said.
The Blantyre-based firm, which deals in outdoor printing, banners, stickers and advertisement branding, pledged to continue sponsoring junior golf in future.
Chirwa, who is a member of the junior golf committee, thanked the sponsor and parents for their support.
