In a bid to help Faith Mwangonde travel to India for treatment, well-wishers have organised a big walk tomorrow in Lilongwe to raise funds for the trip.

Faith, who stays with her mother in Chilinde Township in the capital city, needs about K10 million ($13 700) after she was diagnosed with an inherited muscle disease commonly referred to as an inborn error of metabolism.

Chairperson for the organising committee, Brian Chidampamba-Katimba, said in an interview on Wednesday that the response from the public has so far not been encouraging.

“So far, we have raised about K4.3 million from well-wishers with K3.1 million coming in during the past two weeks. This has raised our hopes though the initiative started on a slower note. We hope to get K5.7 million during the big walk on Saturday,” he said.

Katimba added that among others, some T-shirts have since been printed for sale.

The march is scheduled to start at 8am at Biwi Triangle Petroda Filling Station along the Blantyre-Lilongwe Road to City Mall near Crossroad business complex.

Meanwhile, special accounts have been opened to help solicit more funds from well-wishers. They include Rose M. Ndovi ITF Faith Mwangonde, National Bank of Malawi, Capital City Branch, account number: 1003522567. Alternatively, donations can either be sent via Airtel Money to number 0997383951 or TNM Mpamba 0888465893.

As we went to press yesterday, Faith, who is expected to be flown to India’s Kakilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital and Medical Research Institute in the Asian country, had returned to Kamuzu Central Hospital after her health deteriorated on Wednesday night. n
