Flames striker Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango has expressed delight at ending his goal ‘drought’ in the South African Premier Soccer League.

Gabadinho drew first blood as his club Bidvest Wits beat Free State Stars 3-1 in an Absa Premiership clash at the weekend to go second of the table with 24 points from 12 games.

They are just a point behind leaders Cape Town City, who however, have played two games more, but Wits could go top if they beat Maritzburg United tonight.

Felt relieved: Gabadinho

“It has been a while since I last scored a goal and I felt relieved to score against Free State,” said Mhango who was taken off stage in the 58th minute.

According to a kickoff.com report, after a slow start, Wits took the lead on 14 minutes and it was a disappointing moment for Stars keeper Thela Ngobeni.

“Mhango turned and shot towards goal, and though Ngobeni got a hand to the ball, it snuck into the net as the ball escaped his grasp,” reads part of the report.

Mhango had the chance to make it 2-0 when he found himself one-on-one with Ngobeni, but his chip over the keeper landed on the roof of the net.

Wits’ young starlet Phakamani Mahlambi scored the other two goals for Wits, while Thokozani Sekotlong was on target for the visitors. n
