Gaba on fire

Malawian striker Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango on Wednesday night claimed the man-of-the-match award when he scored a sublime first-half brace to help Bidvest Wits beat hosts Orlando Pirates 2-1 and take the South African Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) driving seat.

The 24-year-old has bagged four goals in two league games as he also notched a brace when Wits thumped Ajax Cape Town 5-0 last week.

On song: Mhango

The former Big Bullets striker now has seven PSL goals and third on the scorers list, four short of leading scorer Tendai Ndoro of Orlando Pirates.

Lebogang Manyama (Cape Town City) is second with nine goals.

According to Kickoff.com, Mhango scored in the 29th minute and in added time of the first-half before Happy Jele pulled one back in the 61st minute.

Kickoff.com reported: “The [first] goal came just before the half-hour mark as the Malawian neatly beat two defenders before curling past [goalkeeper Jackson] Mabokgwane

“Things went from bad to worse for the sea robbers as Mhango leapt brilliantly to head home in the dying moments of the first half to double Wits’ advantage.”

Wits’ victory has piled more misery on Pirates, who suffered a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns last weekend.

Following the victory, Wits are at the summit of the 16-team log table with 31 points from 15 games. They have the same points as second-placed Cape Town City, who are inferior on aggregate and have played two games more. n
