Furkan Gani turned on a vintage display to stun Lab Enterprise Match Play singles defending champion Nestor Msowoya on a bright Friday afternoon at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC).

Msowoya, who was an odds-on favourite ahead of the match, lost two in three—meaning that Gani was in the comfort zone going into the last two holes as he led by two holes.

Jubilation was the prevalent emotion for Gani who is yet to know his semi-final opponent.

“It is not easy to beat the defending champion and I kept my feet to the ground. My aim now is to go all the way to the finals and I will intensify my preparations,” said Gani who is being sponsored by Hotel Victoria.

Doubles champions Edwin Chipala and Donbell Mandala have also qualified for the semi-finals after beating the pair of James Katunga and Atlee Nkhonjera 45-41.

Individual stableford champion and BSC golf captain Hudson Kantwanje will not be able to defend the title having been disqualified technically as he failed to take to the course for his qualifying match having lost a cousin on the same day.

Last year, no lady golfer reached the finals, but this year, in form Margret Mukwenha looks set to defy the odds and go far as she is now in the quarter-finals in which she will face Phillip Phambana.
