This and That

Go ye well, Jonathan

Listen to this article

Today, as I look at some Adam’s Family music cassettes, they have changed from packs of lovely gospel music to reminders of the sad departure of a genius of a musician, Jonathan Gopani.

Gopani was a member of the original Adam’s Family, a group that revolutionalised the gospel music stage.

He died in Malawi’s commercial city, Blantyre, on Wednesday following a head on collision involving a minibus he was driving and a bus belonging to National Bus Company.

His death distorts the gospel music landscape, robbing it of vital living history.

Adam’s Family was a combo of rare talents. They were pioneers of a special trademark.

Many gospel groups have since taken after the group.

Adam’s Family was a hot and coveted brand. It set audiences alight.

In Gopani, the music industry has lost a talent.

The country has lost an entertainer, preacher and educator.

Everytime the group’s song reappeared on one of the radio stations, I pictured, in my mind, the group was on stage.

I had always dreamed of an Adam’s Family reunion.

But death changes the way we live. It alters the way we think and do the things we do.

Go ye well, comrade.

We will sing your teachings, never to forget how you entertained us.
