The Golf Union of Malawi (GUoM) will host a quad-nation junior golf tournament  from December 13-17 at Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC), an event which has been budgeted at K25 million.

GUoM president Frank Mvalo told The Nation yesterday that they have sourced half of the required K12 million needed to successfully host the event.

“We have written companies asking for assistance and we are still appealing to well-wishers to chip in something to make the event more successful.  It is through such tournaments that we can improve the sport by exposing young golfers to the rigours of international golf,” he said.

The countries that will take part in the tournament are Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and hosts Malawi.

For the first time, the international golf tournament will involve both boys and girls, according to Mvalo.

“Each country will send six boys and four girls. It is a big tournament and, so far, preparations are on track. We have two camps in Blantyre and Lilongwe running concurrently.  Before the actual finals we have a preparatory tournament sponsored by Airtel Malawi on December 12,” said Mvalo.

National golf team coach, Chris Kachiguma, who is drilling the junior golfers at LGC, said, so far, the youngsters have shown great potential.

“Here I am training 12 golfers, six boys and six girls. My colleague Dingaan Chirwa is doing the same in Blantyre.”  n
