Govt warns non-performing parastatals

Chief Secretary to Malawi Government George Mkondiwa has expressed concern over poor performance of some statutory corporations in the country, saying they “have lost a sense of direction or have forgotten their purpose”.

Mkondiwa, who partly blamed the poor performance on the management and board of the parastatals, said government will not hesitate to take action and implement changes in the parastatals that are not delivering.

He was speaking in Lilongwe last week at Malawi Institute of Management (MIM), during a corporate governance orientation workshop for the new chairpersons of parastatal organisations.

“It is saddening to see that 50 years down the independence lane, Malawians still receive poor services from our parastatals. The days of laissez faire attitude are past and gone.

“We want parastatals that will deliver with a touch of quality and excellence,” said Mkondiwa.

He said government wants statutory corporations to perform in service delivery, make profits, create new jobs for employable youths, declare and pay dividends to government where applicable.

“Government thus expects you to use your knowledge, skills, abilities, experience and expertise in executing your duties in your respective positions,” said Mkondiwa, who asked the board chairpersons to be dedicated to duty.

Comptroller of statutory corporations Zanga Chikhosi said, among other things, the new boards chairpersons will be oriented on how to perform their functions and duties.

“One of their duties is to declare their assets within 90 days upon assuming their office and that will be following the first board meeting. This is because after their appointment, the board members become public officers,” he said.
