If I were

Gwanda Chakuamba

Veteran politician, I would realise it is sad that after all the wealth I accumulated during my heydays in politics, I am now a destitute, unable to live a normal life due to financial problems.

If I were Mbuya, I would realise that while it must have taken a lot of courage for me to come out in the open and speak about the misery I am going through, the situation should also give me plenty of food for thought and reflect on where it all went wrong for me to find myself in such a sorry state.

Oh yes, if I were Gwanda Chakuamba, I would also realise that it will be hard for those of the old school to believe my story considering my past as a political heavyweight who served in senior portfolios since the late 1960s.

I would ask myself what is it that the likes of John Tembo, Bakili Muluzi, Louis Chimango and Patrick Mbewe did to remain in the comfort zone that I wasn’t able to do?

I would also consider turning into an adviser for the young politicians such as Saulos Chilima, Atupele Muluzi and Sostein Gwengwe so that in their twilight they should not find themselves in my situation.

If only I were Gwandanguluwe Chinkanzi Steveen Chakuamba-Phiri, I would appreciate that it will be tough to convince people that I am struggling to raise K50 to buy bonya when I used to own properties such as Mount Pleasant No1 House, the magnificent Milare mansion and all that.

That is if only I were the big shot that is Gwanda Chakuamba, unfortunately I am not the gentleman who was once touted the ‘Lower Shire giant’.
