Ghanaian star forward and captain Asamoah Gyan has hailed local football talent, saying there are some players who have the potential to scale greater heights.

The Black Stars striker, who is considered one of Africa’s finest forwards, said this on the sidelines of the Standard Bank Knockout Cup final between Silver Strikers and Azam Tigers at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

“There was exciting football on show today and I was impressed with many players such as number 2 for Tigers [Yamikani Chester], captain for Silver [Lucky Malata], scorer of their goal [Rhodrick Gonani] and that short midfielder [Frank Banda]. I even mentioned it to [FAM] president [Walter Nyamilandu].

“Generally, I have always been impressed with Malawian players having played against the national team twice and to me [Joseph] Kamwendo is a fantastic player,” said Gyan, who graced the final as special guest in his capacity as UNAids ambassador.

After the match, FAM president rewarded Gonani with K50 000 (about $131) as the outstanding player.

Nyamilandu also recognised the performance of Gonani and Peter Wadabwa to whom he pledged K25 000 (about $65) each during the prize presentation ceremony held at Ufulu Gardens in the capital.
