Heavy winds displace hundreds in Karonga

It never rains, but pours in Karonga.

Barely weeks after a hailstorm destroyed nearly 60 houses on the southern part of the lakeshore district, heavy winds have blown away roofs of about 500 houses on the northern tip.

The area under Paramount Chief Kyungu experienced heavy winds on Wednesday around 9pm.

The nocturnal storm damaged belongings of many households.

Yesterday, village civil protection committees in the area were still assessing the gravity of the loss.

However, some of them said they were lucky nobody was killed by the wind.

The displaced Malawians asked for urgent relief, especially food and shelter. n
