Indigenous Businesses Association of Malawi (Ibam) on Monday announced the launch of an initiative to fundraise for flood victims nationwide.

Ibam interim president Mike Mlombwa told journalists in Blantyre that his group was responding to government’s call for help.

IMG_186043260369091 (1)Following floods that claimed lives and destroyed property, President Peter Mutharika on January 13 2015 declared Malawi a State of Disaster that needed both local and international assistance.

The President called for assistance from civil society, private sector and all well-meaning Malawians, donor agencies and UN arms to help in alleviating the suffering of Malawians.

Mlombwa said Ibam decided to partner government by mobilising resources that would be channelled to the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (Dodma).

He said: “We will, through the media, announce a bank account soon to be opened at FDH Bank. We appeal to all Malawians to contribute in any small way they can.

“If say one million people were to contribute as small as K200 each, that is K200 million.”

Lewis Chiwalo, executive director of Economic Empowerment Action Group, who was also present at the briefing, said it was high time Malawians started looking after themselves and it is in times like this the nation has to show the world the love and unity that exist.
