If I were: Kondwani Nankhumwa

Information, Tourism and Culture Minister, I would not declare that former president the late Bingu wa Mutharika’s death was “man-made” when postmortem results by qualified medical professionals revealed that he died of cardiac arrest.

If I were my minister that is Nankhumwa, I would be careful with what I say, especially on such sensitive issues, when I have no concrete proof.

Oh yes, if I were the government spokesperson, I would realise that there have been instances when people have died when they appeared to be in excellent health in the past, and, therefore, it is not something peculiar.

I would also appreciate the Chichewa saying ‘nkonze-nkonze ananyula maliro a eni’ (crying more than the bereaved).

How I wish I were Nankhumwa, because I would realise that it is unfortunate for me as the oficial government spokesperson to base my claims on a newspaper article that was not aunthentic.

If only I were bwana Nankhumwa, I would realise that in an interview I had with the media soon after my speech, I appeared to be contradicting myself as I stated that I was not disputing the findings of the commission of inquiry that the former president died of cardiac arrest.

That is if only I were one Kondwani Nankhumwa, but I am not that gentleman.
