If I were: Lexten Kachama

Inspector General (IG) of Malawi Police Service (MPS), I would appreciate that allegations that two of my officers were involved in a series of armed robberies are disturbing and frightening.

If I were the IG, I would realise that when law enforcers based at Mzuzu State Lodge are allegedly implicated in such evil acts, then there is also reason to fear for the safety of my President, Peter Mutharika, who coincidentally was there for over a week or so not so long ago.

How I wish I were my man Lexten as I would also realise that while it is in my interest to throw out all bad apples in the police system, there is also need to improve the working conditions of my team.

Yes, bwana IG, these men and women in uniform are supposed to enforce the country’s laws so that there is law and order, but there is also need to motivate them to get the best from them.

If I were bwana Kachama, I would, therefore, strive to negotiate for better perks for my officers if I expect them to serve the country better.

That is if only I were one Lexten Kachama, the IG. Unfortunately, I am not that gentleman for I am just a poor scribe that is Garry Chirwa.
