Listed sugar manufacturer Illovo Sugar (Malawi) has said it is committed to helping people who have been affected by floods in some of parts of the country in response to the call made by President Peter Mutharika.

The company’s corporate affairs manager Walter Nyamilandu-Manda said this on Monday in Chikwawa when the company gave K10 million to Chikwawa and Nsanje districts to assist people who have been displaced by flooding waters.

“Our operations are based within the vicinity of Chikwawa and Nsanje, as such, being a company that operates this side, we felt we have a role to play in solving some of the problems faced by our friends.

“As a company, we will continue to support the flood victims and hope that this gesture will comfort the affected people,” he said.

Besides the monetary support, the company has put up a tent that accommodates 100 people at Chikwawa and donated one tonne of sugar in each of the two districts.

Chikwawa district commissioner (DC) Alex M’doko said the money will go a long way in alleviating some of the major problems being faced by flood victims in the camps.

He said the money will, among other things, help to solve logistical problems and pay debts to people they owe money and services.

“This is a timely donation. Let it be known that we are using about K150 000 on fuel in a day to ferry items and other necessities to various camps and that some camps are running without firewood and relish,” he said.

Nsanje DC Harry Phiri thanked Illovo for the donation, which he said will help in easing some of problems faced at the camp site.

He said though the water levels have receded, the weather still looks unpredictable, which will force the councils to continue keeping the people in the camps; hence, the need for such kind of donations.
