International Image Film Festival for Women inspires artists

Artists were inspired by the workshop that was held at the International Image Film Festival for Women at St Andrews International High School in Blantyre on March 22.

The workshop organised by Zimbabwean-based International Image Film Festival in conjunction with Malawian First Wave Pictures, was part of a film festival held at the school and was attended by Saint Andrews High School Senior Drama Students, Artists from Nanzikambe Arts, Dikamawoko Arts, as well as amateur film makers from Blantyre.

The theme of the  film festival was theme Women Alive: Women of Heart, aimed at giving Malawian women a spotlight and it draws funding from European Union.

During the workshop, participants discussed issues that affect women filmmakers in Africa and Malawi. The workshop included a review session of the films that were screened during the festival.

Some of the films that were screened and subjected to debate included Imbabazi, a film based on the Rwandan Genocide and I want a wedding Dress – a film shot in Zimbabwe which triggered debates on gender issues in film.

Villant Ndasowa director of First Wave Pictures said they realised the uniquesness of film in comparison to other art forms since it combines numerous art forms.

“We realized through the festival we capture most art forms from literature, visual arts and performing arts at once,” said Villant.

She decried lack of funding as one of the challenges the film industry is facing in Malawi and Africa.

“We are planning to hold a similar event at Mzuzu University in April and we are hoping it will also have great patronage as it was in Blantyre,” said Ndasowa. n
