Irish community to fundraise for Chikwawa flood victims

The Irish community in Malawi will during this year’s Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations to raise funds for flood victims in Chikwawa, one of the worst hit districts of the recent natural disaster.

On March 14, Lilongwe will join hundreds of cities around the world to celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, a Irish cultural and religious holiday that dates back to the ninth century and pays homage to the nation’s most prominent patron saint.

bangula_floodsOn the night, a traditional Irish band and dancers, flying all the way from Dublin will lead the festivities at the Sunbird Capital Hotel Marquee which will also include performances from Malawi’s best known and talented musicians.

“We have an amazing Irish traditional band and dancers coming for this event. This year, we’ll also have a wonderful mix of Malawi’s greatest musicians playing classic Irish tunes as well as a very special guest performance on the night. We will have absolutely brilliant raffle prizes to be won on the night.

“Proceeds from the event will be donated to Irish NGOs working with local partners in Chikwawa to support families to re-build their homes after the devastating floods,” reads a statement from the Irish community in Malawi.

Tickets for the concert are on sale now at Papaya Cafe, Lark Cafe, Four Seasons, Koko Bean and Serendipity.

The event is sponsored by Airtel Malawi, Ethiopian Airlines, Carlsberg, Ulendo Travel, Malawi Style and the Kerry Group.
