Jah Messenger outta bounds

Jah People, it is surprising why the cancellation of Luciano’s Africa Tour is no laughing matter.

Who knew the Jamaican reggae hitmaker would let a misconception of Africa decide his tour comprising a first ever performance in Malawi?

It is reported that Jamaican entertainers risk quarantine for visiting countries hit by the highly contagious killer disease, ebola, ravaging West Africa. Jamaica Observer says Luciano changed his plans due to his own research.

Prevention is better than cure, but ignorance can be more damaging. The Messanger erred in his research.

The damage is not limited to his incorrect message that Malawi is one of the Ebola hit countries. Rather, Luciano needlessly insults the continent he calls home by adding weight to hasty generalisations that portray Africa as a diseased continent.

Wake up, Rasta!

Africa comprises 54 countries and Malawi belongs to the bigger body which remains ebola-free. So are Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa which he was scheduled to tour.

Yet Luciano is one of frontline reggae voices revered for songs of repatriation, a confessed affinity for Africa and desire to return to and settle on these shores just when the western media mirrors the continent as a land of darkness and shambles.

The Jamaican terms Africa his original home, lamenting how slave traders dragged his forefathers to work in American plantations.

Luciano has not let down this so-called motherland. His ‘ebolaphobia’, a fear of the unknown, just confirms repatriation is a marketing tag like any other—a construction of ultra-capitalists only happy to sell their products to Mama Africa and her brood.

Shame, Rasta! Africa is just a song. If Malawi gave Luciano land, would he be on the next flight back to Africa?

If repatriation isn’t just another publicity stunt, where do Luciano & Co source their understanding of their beloved Africa? Just where, if not from the Western press they seemingly detest?

Jah Messanger should do more research instead of pretending to be closer to Africa than the rest of the overseas community.

He makes repatriation look like shameless hypocrisy. That’s why the cancellation of his tour is a laughing matter. When the messenger sounds fake, why must Africa trust his bigoted message? Live Whitney CD/DVD to be released. n
