To be awarded for her involvement in Malawi’s film industry: Banda

President Joyce Banda has been nominated to receive a special recognition award at the African Film Development Foundation awards in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania on August 31.

According to communication from the organisers, the award recognises the President’s contribution towards the development and advancement of the local entertainment industry.

“Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda has been nominated as a recipient for then “custodian of African Culture” in the special recognition Award category in the African Film Development Awards 2013,” reads a statement from the country representative for African Film Development Foundation, Dawa Loga Lemberger.

She said the main aim of the African Film Development Awards is to recognise excellence in individuals and organisations that have distinguished themselves in their contribution to the growth and development of African cinema.

“AFDA decided to invite and honour, Dr. Joyce Banda because of her achievements towards the development and advancement of the Malawian entertainment industry. This award is a major achievement for Malawi because it shows how Malawians are sentimental about embracing and promoting film.

“It also shows that the industry in Malawi has been recognised around Africa and its fast growing. This event is an opportunity and platform for the President to socialize with the film makers and producers to promote our film and arts industry. Malawi’s Arts and film industry is up and coming and has the potential to grow with the right connections which this event has brought forth in one room,” says Lemberger.

In March this year, Banda hosted nominations for the African Movie Academy Awards (Amaa) in Lilongwe, the first for Malawi. With Amaa Malawi has seen the growth of its film industry with over 400 students being trained in different aspects of film making.

This year’s AFDA is a maiden edition with nominations from over 30 African Countries. Nominees are film makers, heads of government, corporate organisations, film promoters, distributors, media and film journalists.

Guest of honour at the event is His Excellency President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, President of the United Republic of Tanzania. Also a special award for the development of Nollywood will be given to Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The awards will be broadcast on DStv.
