Announced the dissolution: Jumbe

New Labour Party (NLP) president Friday Jumbe yesterday announced the dissolution of the party and urged party members to join Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

Addressing a press conference in Blantyre, Jumbe said the decision came after realising that what NLP promised Malawians during campaign is being implemented by the current DPP-led government.

“We had a national executive meeting today [Tuesday] here in Blantyre where it was agreed to dissolve the party because what we wanted to implement is being implemented by the DPP-led government. Party members are free to join any party they want, but if they want our advice, they should join the DPP,” said Jumbe.

Asked what will happen should some party members decide against dissolution as was the case with Maravi People’s Party (MPP) of Uladi Mussa, who dissolved it and joined the People’s Party (PP), Jumbe said it is up to them (members), but that they have to find a new executive committee as the current one agreed for dissolution.

He, however, disclosed that he has retired from politics and returned to the corporate world although he supports the DPP which, among other things, wants to put discipline into the civil service, improve health sector and education.

NLP, a splinter party of United Democratic Front (UDF), was formed in 2012 after some UDF members were dissatisfied with the election of Atupele Muluzi as party president.

NLP becomes the second party to be dissolved after elections after Chipani Cha Pfuko (CCP) of Davis Katsonga.
