Thoko Kakhongwe fulfilled his dream of winning a bodybuilding trophy this year on Sunday.

He topped a field of 12 contestants at Gymkhana Club to take the Mr. Zomba Championship.

However, the competition proved tough for last year’s champion Emmanuel Binauli who settled for the third place. Ophaniel Kanyenda took the runner-up slot, which was previously held by the new title-holder.

Kakhongwe, who finished on position five during the Mr. Malawi Championship two weeks ago, received K100 000 while Kanyenda and Binauli, who are soldiers at Cobbe Barracks in Zomba, got K75 000 and K50 000 respectively.

“I am happy my dream has finally come true. I am now a big man in Zomba,” said the former national weightlifting champion. “I will do my best to defend the crown next year.”

Before the Mr. Zomba contest, there was a five-round boxing bout between Bright Mdoka and McNott Phiri. Mdoka won it on points.

According to Mr. Zomba contest organiser Bright Limani, he is impressed with the improvements that most of the contestants have made and they hope to experience even tougher competition next year.

WT Food Zone, Teng-Da Investments and Mulima Hardware co-sponsored the annual event to the tune of K560 000. However, WT Food Zone’s managing director Andrew Sungisa, whose firm contributed K455 000 to this year’s contest, has promised to up their financial backing for next event to K1 million.
