Malawi Defence Force (MDF) football teams’ dominance continued when Kamuzu Barracks (KB) toppled Mighty Wanderers from the TNM Super League first-round throne on Wednesday.

KB edged Mafco 1-0 through World Nkuliwa’s 44th minute strike at Chitowe Stadium, Dwangwa in Nkhotakota, to collect unassailable 29 points, two points ahead of now second-placed Wanderers.

No other opposition can reach KB’s tally, the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) general secretary Williams Banda confirmed on Wednesday.

“Last season, Silver Strikers finished the first round on 32 points and this season’s tally reflects stiff competition and also a reward for KB’s investment in players,” Banda noted.

Now, the Billy Phambala side will pocket K250 000 (about $625) for being first-round kings and go into this Saturday’s Carlsberg Cup final against Moyale Barracks on a high at Mzuzu Stadium.

Another Army side is set to emulate the exploits of Mafco, who won the Presidential Cup, leaving the civilian clubs with the ultimate league championship and the Standard Bank Knockout Trophy to fight for.

In Tuesday’s game, Moyale Barracks thwarted Red Lions’ ambition of topping the Super League’s first round after beating them 2-0 through Steven Mkandawire and Dues Nkutu’s goals at Mzuzu Stadium.

With that defeat, the Lions returned from Mzuzu with a point earned after a 2-2 draw with bottom-placed Mzuzu United at the same venue on Sunday.

The Lions finished the first round on 25 points while lying third, but could be pushed down depending on how fourth-positioned Blue Eagles who have 24 points and a game to go will perform.

The first round ends over the weekend with Big Bullets hosting Silver at Kamuzu Stadium.
