This year’s edition of the rejuvenated Blantyre Mayor’s Trophy will wrap up this Saturday at the Kamuzu Stadium.

The Under-14 primary schools’ competition will see Makata battling it out against Naizi in football finals and Mbayani taking on Chilomoni in netball. A social soccer match between Blantyre councillors and Blantyre City Council staff will curtain-raise the event.

Mambo: everything is set

According to the  trophy’s organising committee chairperson Mike Mambo, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa, who pumped K1 million into the K10 million contest, is expected to be the guest of honour.

“Everything is set for the final showdown,” Mambo said. “It has been a wonderful journey and we have to wrap up the 2017 edition before the Christmas festivities. The games will start at 1:30pm.”

According to Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) chairperson for Blantyre Urban, Egnazio Libwaloh, Makata thrashed Namitete 3-0 in the semi-finals last weekend while Naizi saw off South Lunzu 5-2. In netball, Mbayani walloped  Namiyango 38-2 whereas Chilomoni beat Mzamba 22-17.

Over 50 primary schools took part in the competition contested by primary schools from Ndirande, Chilomoni, South Lunzu, Zingwangwa, Bangwe and Limbe education zones since October this year.

The annual Blantyre Mayor’s Trophy was established in 1968 with the purpose of developing sports in the city. However, it went into oblivion for the past few years before being revived this year. n
