Karonga Prison officer-in-charge Prince Kasili has asked business persons in the district to come into rescue of the correctional facility as overcrowding has reached a critical stage.

Kasili made the appeal when businessperson Leonard Kiyombo donated a cow and foodstuffs worth K500 000 to the inmates on Sunday.

He said 102 inmates are housed in rooms recommended for no more than 30 people.

“We transfer some of the prisoners to Mzuzu, but not regularly due to shortage of fuel,’’ he said. Kiyombo assured the prison of more support.
