Karonga radio station awards musicians

The Catholic Church-owned Tuntufye Radio Station in Karonga has awarded outstanding musicians in the North in the just ended year.

The awards, introduced in 2015, are a brainchild of the diocese’s head Bishop Martin Mtumbuka who wants to uplift artists, especially talented but little known musicians.

During a music awards dinner and dance gala two weeks ago, the station awarded up-and-coming musicians Tumpale Kangele, Oscar Mbughi and Karonga AME Choir for scooping first, second and third positions respectively in the category of Best Band/Artist category.

The station also awarded Karonga Diocese Youth Choir, St Cecilia Choir and Livingstonia’s St Teresa Choir in the category of Best Catholic Choir.

Tuntufye Radio head of music department Matthews Moyo in an interview said the event, which started with mass, was graced by the diocese’s vicar-general Father Dennis Chitete.

He said the station then held a music show and a dinner and dance gala where the artists were awarded.

Moyo said listeners also voted for songs that best entertained them in the year.

The inaugural event two years ago proved worthwhile as it exposed Mzuzu-based gospel musician Mariah Nundwe who has since scaled heights after bagging two awards.

Two of her songs Urwirwi and Lekani Kusuzgika were voted second and third best songs.

Moyo said the station will continue organising the event to appreciate the role musicians and listeners play in broadcasting.

“It is the bishop’s wish that little known artists are uplifted and promoted through the radio station,” he said.

In a related development, stream and download website Malawi-music.com has released a list of songs that enjoyed more downloads in the just ended year.

Dubbed Best of 2016, the list is a compilation of 100 free songs that were downloaded between January and September.

Gospel urban artist Gwamba leads the pack with his hit Better followed by Piksy, Tay Grin and Lulu for the song Angozo. Wadusa Pompa remix by W-Twice which features several artists is third followed by Chapatali by Rita featuring Dan Lu. n
