Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Member of Parliament for Kasungu East, Madaliso Kazombo has mobilised his constituents to stage a vigil at the districts commissioner’s office to force government to construct a hospital at Kapyanga in T/A Wimbe.

“In my maiden speech [in parliament] I asked government to construct [a health centre] here at Kapyanga. Government did approve but they never fulfilled,” said Kazombo at the meeting.

“Now the only action remaining is that together with chiefs from here and pregnant women, we will match and hold a vigil at the DC’s office. This is the only way government will listen to us,” said Kazombo.

Kazombo is yet to announce the day of the vigil.

The villagers in the area managed to mould 600 000 bricks and also raised 2- tones of sand and quarry stones, but the project did not take-off.

Kasungu District Health Officer Jerome Nkambule said Kapyanga has been registering high maternal deaths since it far from nearby health centre, where the nearest hospital is 40 kilometres.

National Coordinator for White Ribbon Alliance Kondwani Bright Simbota said they have embarked on a program to directly engage citizens to hear challenges facing they face in maternal mortality.
